Good Morning, Traders!…👋
U.S. stock futures sank on Thursday, pulling back from the previous day's rally as investors ponder how far President Donald Trump is willing to negotiate on tariffs. Stocks were retreating after a volatile day of trading ended in a rally, spurred by Trump’s announcement of a one-month pause on tariffs targeting automakers.
Trump revealed the delay after discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the heads of General Motors $GM ( ▼ 7.69% ) , Ford $F ( ▼ 2.67% ), and Stellantis $STLA ( ▼ 1.92% ). Shares of the Big Three automakers rose on the news but remained flat after the bell. However, the market's relief from Trump’s trade policy may be short-lived as uncertainty remains.
The broad 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico imposed earlier this week are still in effect with no resolution in sight, and more levies are set to begin in April. Retail giants have been adjusting their 2025 guidance due to tariff concerns, and Thursday’s earnings reports from Macy’s $M ( ▼ 1.13% ) , Kroger $KR ( ▲ 0.73% ) , Costco $COST ( ▲ 1.01% ) , and Gap $GAP ( ▲ 1.47% ) will provide more insight into how the ongoing trade war may affect the industry.
